Death Company WIP

Below, my first attempt at painting Death Company marines. Don't like very much painting black since i can't attain the degree of deepness i would like. This mini though is already in a good state of advancement, of course i still need to do the highligts on blacks and reds.
The brother depicted here is Brother Mallascarius, former member of the fifth company. He succumbed to the Black Rage fighting the Tyranid menace when all his squad but himself was annihilated by some poisonous beast of the Hive. Wielding a deadly inferno pistol, he seeks redemption in death.

The dirty half dozen

(Long) before the new codex came out, i started working on a new five man assault squad. They were intended to ride in a Razorback with las/plas loadout. Sadly, with the new codex you can't give 'backs to assault squads as dedicated transports anymore. Luckily, i haven't bought the actual kit yet... I don't know what i will do with them now, they are fun to paint though so i guess i'll get along. The fluff is these guys are really a bunch of misfits even amongst the Blood Angels. Crazy, psychopaths, murderous killers, they love to kill the enemy close and personal with combat blade and fire, lot of fire. The first i completed is Brother Cullarius, a known arsonist who loves his flamethrower more than his brethren. Modelling wise i made them out of spare bits i had on my sprues, so they don't have conventional chainswords and bolt pistols, rather they go with knives and hand flamers, grenades and improvised hand weapons. The sergeant is double wielding a bolt pistol and a hand flamer. Now, with the new codex, it's possible to equip a AS sergeant with double inferno pistol, so i guess i will remake him to gunsling a pair of these. I still have to decide how transport 'em into the thick of the fray though...

The Angelic Host

To celebrate the new Blood Angels Codex release i'm posting a family picture of my very small BA army. There's even the Rhino, on the sprue, back there, you see it... So, finally it's in my hands, a brand new copy of the brand new codex. I intend to post soon my impressions about it, not as a general review (everyone and his mom is already doing it) but to consider how is it going to impact on my little beloved strike force. So i hope more will follow soon, after i read it at least twice. In the meantime, enjoy more red plastic men.

Veteran Sergeant WIP

I didn't plan to post WIP pics on this blog when i started it, but since i'm a veeeeeeeeery slow painter i think i'll have to if i want to post anything at all from time to time. Plus, i'm quite happy with the way that mini is turning out. I loved that miniature from the first time i saw it. I think it's really "bloodangelesque". So i had my wife gift me one two xmas ago... from the state it's now you can see how slow i am with painting. The highlighting seems ok to me though (please, if you think it's shit feel free to comment, i need sincere advices more than hollow praises :P). Now i'm quite afraid to work the details out 'cause it's such a beautiful and well done mini i really fear to screw something in the process... On the "conversion" side, you can see i changed the "bare" head that the original sarge was provided with, with a Death Co. helmet and swapped the hand with the hand flamer with a bolt pistol one. The first change was because usually i prefer helmetted marines, i think it's quite stupid to go around in a apocalyptic battlefield like the ones from the 40th century bare headed if you can wear a power armour helm; the second change is just to save some points 'cause Vets already cost a small fortune ;P And this is all. See you soon folks.

Land Speeder Berathiel

Berathiel is my strike force fast attack choice. Usually land speeders are employed in reconnaissance role, but since Strike Force Hammer of Haefestus is mainly infantry based and lacks heavier vehicles, Berathiel is rather used as a heavy artillery platform, equipped with a multi-melta and a typhoon missile launcher, striking from reserve to (hopefully) vanish again before any enemy unit is able to retaliate.
From a modelling point of view, Berathiel was my first (and, at the moment, only) land speeder, so i was quite worried about the final result. Also, i had to paint it quite fast (i'm a very slow painter...) 'cause i needed it ready in time to attend a Battle Brothers tournament and i thought it would make a great centerpiece for my army.
All considered, i'm quite happy with the result. I hope some day i will have the time and money to buy and paint a new one, maybe two, to have a full land speeder squadron. Also, i'm looking forward to the new BA codex release to get a hefty point reduction for this beauty, since at the moment Blood Angels land speeders are the most expensive land speeders out there.

Blood Angels Assault Squad Cherubim

Assault squad Cherubim forms the core around which the strike force is built. Lightly armed and swift, it's main purpose is not engaging in hand to hand combat, but rather tank hunting.
A pair of melta guns and a specialist sergeant armed with inferno pistol and melta bombs ensures that the fast insertion ability of this squad is well used against heavy armored targets, like traitor Landraiders or the like.
Following, some more pics from the squad taken during the Nova Pavonis campaign against a strong Tau force.
Blood Angels assault squad
Combat squad Alpha and Combat squad Beta (on the background), supported by heavy infantry and a dreadnought from the Dark Angels 4th Company, advances on Tau held primary objective. They are ready to charge.
Last stand. After a heroic charge that wiped an entire Tau firewarrior cadre from the objective, Brother Calantus stands alone against the onrushing Tau counterattack.

The art of objective holding: rise of the Tactical Squad

Tacticals and Aegis Defense Line, the new marine bread and butter?
This is the first (hopefully) of a series of articles analyzing how to play Blood Angels in 6th edition and trying to devise new methods to make our army competitive on the gaming table.
I will start with the humble tactical squad, because i think it's the unit that had the major change in use within our army from 5th to 6th edition.
Indeed, in 5th edition there was no reason at all to fill a troop slot with tacticals instead of assault marines. The typical Blood Angel assault marine was superior in every aspect to his brother tactical marine. He had far more mobility, same staying power and point to point was a lot more cost effective.
Sadly, this has changed with the new rules: firstly, it's a lot easier to kill marines now. There's even single weapons that's entirely devoted to that (baleflamer omg...). So having a power armour it's not a warranty of survival on his own anymore.
Second, the mechanized assault armies of past are long gone (at least for what concerns Blood Angels). No more your average ass-marine can disembark from a Rhino or Razorback and engage the enemy in the same turn, thus staying safe from incoming fire. Nor they can stay safe inside their transports and still capture their objective...
Thirdly, the Sanguinary Priest and his portable Feel no Pain have been nerfed great time: reduced from 4+ to 5+ (i know, now you can save against more weapons but still it's a 22% less chance to make it). Combine this with the HUGE Furious Charge nerf (bye bye +1I and bye bye striking first against other MEQ) and the ass-marine becomes a lot less survivable both from enemy shooting and during the close combat phase.
Under this light, tactical squads became a lot more useful for a single but really important task: objective holding. The importance of this function in 6th edition is stressed everywhere so no need to explain it here. But why tacticals should be better at it?
Because they are cheaper than assault squads. A lot cheaper. Even if they are still more expensive than the new DA tacticals, they only cost 170 points with a flamer and a missile launcher (both excellent weapons, in defensive and offensive roles). To reasonably kit an assault squad you need at least 215 pts for a pair of melta guns and melta bombs, and then they need to get up close to enemy armor, not to stay back camping an objective. Or, if you wanna kit them defensively, you need to give up the jump packs, buy a Rhino, a pair of flamers and a power fist, for a grand total of 240 points (and still, Rhino will die easily and give away First Blood).
A tactical hiding behind an ADL with quad gun and a librarian in support can do even better: 2+ cover saves when going to ground make them a tough cookie (yes, they will only snap shot then, but they are not there to shoot, they are there to hold a precious objective while your assault marines are away doing the real killing), and the libby can deal some decent anti air manning the quad gun while giving prescience to that missile launcher for some extra anti air fire (it will hit on 6's anyway so who cares if you are going to ground? At least you get the reroll from prescience).
I would advise not to combat squad, since you need a tough blob to stay on the objective and hold it. Five men squads are too easy to kill or rout, and then ten men are more effective since the librarian can give prescience to all. Of course, if you need to hold many objectives (or, on the contrary, if objective holding is not a concern for you) you can split the special weapon and send it to do some forward mayhem (or just to distract enemy fire from the real target).
So, in conclusion, my humble opinion here is that you need some tactical squads now (one or two, depending on how many points you are playing and how many objectives you need to hold). You can also give 'em Rhinos for cover against those pesky heldrake's baleflamers, but that will raise their price and probably give away some easy VP's to your opponent.
In the end, waiting for a new codex, i think that tactical squads are a good stop-gap unit, but in reality Blood Angels should be centered around aggressive, assault focused tactics and not objective camping. While we still wait, though, this is what we have, and what we need to make good use of. On a final note, i always thought that tactical squads are easy and fun to paint and they make a great show on the gaming table, so even from an aesthetic p.o.w. it doesn't hurt to have a few of them hanging around!
